Dental implant Procedure

After evaluating the complexity of the dental implant procedure or risk assesment, your dentist will decide to either refer you to a dental implant specialist or to do the procedure in-house.

Dental Implants come in different brands, shapes and sizes. A lot of factors will determine the implant choice, but your dentist will discuss this with you. After the appropiate dental implant is chosen the procedure is broken down in 3 simple steps:

Step 1 (Place the Dental Implant)
Making a hole (osteotomy) in the area with a series of drills. The dental implant is then placed in the osteotomy. 'Bulk out' the area with artificial bone and membrane if necessaary. Cover the area with gum and placement of stitches.

Step 2 (Place the Dental Abutment)
Placement of the implant abutment after 2-3 months or immediately after stage 1 if possible. Sometimes if a lot af augmentation of the area is nesessary, stage 2 will only follow 4-6 months later to allow for enough bone healing to create tissue volume and healing.

Step 3 (Place the prosthetic part or crown)
This is the important step where the visible part of the whole implant procedure is planned and fitted. The final prostethis will either be a dental crown, dental bridge or denture that fits on your implant or implants. After the dental impressions are taken, the work is send to the dental Labaratory to manufacture the crown or prosthetis.
